Q&A w/ Julia Smith

Covenant Spotlight

Julia Smith, Vice-Chairperson of the Board

  1. Tell us about yourself.

I have been married for 29 years to David and we have two sons, Eric (25) and Luke (20). We have lived in California, England. and Michigan since being married and just recently moved to Northville.

My favorite movie is “The Sound of Music”. I saw it for the first time at a movie theater, and it was so long, that there was an intermission. In addition to the movie, I’ve visited Austria and taken “The Sound of Music Tour”, seen the stage production of it in London, and been to a concert at Orchestra Hall where the Von Trapp grandchildren performed. Due to an unfortunate fainting incident at a prior concert, I had the opportunity to meet the Von Trapp grandchildren before their concert. I was speechless!

I love to watch TV (it’s almost always on at my house). Favorite shows are “Manifest”, “American Idol”, “America’s Got Talent, Tigers baseball, college basketball, and almost anything on HGTV, A&E, TLC, and Food Network.

Hobbies are reading, gardening, baking, and walking/jogging.

  2. When is your Birthday?
My birthday is April 5 (1964!)

  3. Fun fact about you!
I just took up running again (I stopped running after my senior year in high school) and did my first 5K in October of 2018. Since then I have run 8 additional 5K’s (including one in Florida) and I am hoping to do a half marathon next October.

  4. What were you doing before joining the Covenant Community Care board?
Before I joined the CCC Board, I was volunteering with a number of other organizations. I was chairperson of the Dearborn Youth Symphony board (my of my sons were members of the orchestra). I also was the chairperson of the Lutheran High School Westland Craft Show, a huge event that is the primary fundraiser for the school. (Both of my sons went to school there). I am also active at my church (Guardian Lutheran) where I am a member of the handbell choir and a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) caregiver.

  5. How did you get connected with Covenant Community Care and/or find out about it?
I got connected with Covenant about 15 years ago when a friend asked if I would help them plan their first annual golf outing. I only intended to get them up and running but I so enjoyed the people I worked with that I ended up staying on. Over time, I connected with the Covenant mission and found myself getting more involved, including helping with clinic tours and planning Courage to Care events.

  6. How long you have been on the board at Covenant Community Care?
I have been on the Covenant Board for a little over two years and currently serve as the Vice Chair.

  7. What is it that keeps you on the board at Covenant Community Care?

I absolutely love Covenant and cannot say enough about the people that make up this organization. I am blessed to serve alongside such humble, compassionate, and faith filled individuals. The people who work at Covenant (staff, board, and volunteers) are truly the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing healthcare, hope, and healing to those who need it most.
